Final days :(

On Thursday, we went to Capitol Hill. I didn’t have a meeting with a Louisiana congressman, instead I went with one of the girls who needed a partner. She was from Ohio. It was really interesting; I’ve never been inside the Senators buildings and they were extremely nice buildings. We took our pictures in front of the Capitol building, which was really cool. Then that night we had our formal gala. It was like our final celebration together. The food was fancy and delicious and then we had a dance. I enjoyed spending this time with all the people I had met and made friends with. It was a wonderful way to bring us all together and finish off the week. Today we all packed and had one last session with a lady named Nicole Quiroga. She is station manager at W-ZDC Telemundo. She was a really good speaker and had lots of energy. We all said our final good byes and traded phone numbers. It was a wonderful experience and something that I will never forget. I plan on staying in contact with all of the people I’ve met. I appreciate everything that George Mason and all of the staff have done for us this week.

I should tell you all about yesterday since I didn’t get to post anything. So yesterday we went to the National Press Club. It was a really cool because very important people have had press conferences there so it made me feel very important. We listened to Chuck Todd, Johnathan Martin, and Anne Kornblut. They had lots of opinions about everything in politics. They were very nice and good about answering our questions and making us think. Our next speaker was Hoda Kobt, she is an amazing speaker and has a wonderful personality. She was very nice and treated us like we were very knowledgeable, young adults. She wasn’t all business and wanted to have fun. She was wonderful! At night we went on the moonlit stroll of the monuments. We ran out of time and only got to go to the White House and the Lincoln Memorial but all in all, a cool experience. Today…where to even start. Not a good start to the day first of all. Ok let’s me stop and just tell you what was supposed to happen. We were all supposed to look our very best because we were going to be on LIVE NATIONAL TELEVISION So you can imagine, one of the more important days this week. So me and my roomie, kind of excited, each set our own alarms earlier than normal for this week so we can make it to the buses and be ready on time. Well for whatever reason, neither of our alarms went off or maybe we slept through it, who knows, and so we didn’t get up. Now, we were supposed to be outside ready to load buses at 6:45. Well we wake up at 6:46. I woke up all of a sudden, look at the clock and go into instant panick mode. We start grabbing stuff, throwing clothes on, and grabbing what we can to finish getting ready on the way. I throw my hair into a ponytail and run out the door with the rest of my clothes, make-up, jewelry, and shoes in my hands. I lost my watch, put my shoes on the wrong feet, and just put a touch of make-up on…and i have to sit in a live audience! I was so upset. Not a great start to the morning, but whatever, I was determined to not let this decide how my day was going to go. So we go to C-SPAN do the show and then head to the Smithsonian museums. My parents met up with me to eat lunch with me and some of my friends; the day finally begins to start looking better. We start walking to the Smithsonian Castle and look around and then head to the National Gallery of Art..it begins to thunder and sprinkle on our way. So we go in and look around, by a few things, and we have to leave at 3:15 to get back to the bus on time. So we head for the door and when we look outside it’s pouring!!! We have no choice, we have to go. WE GOT DRENCHED! When we got to the buses everyone, except the adults, were soaking wet. So my bad day just got worse. However, the day ended well. We heard from Sari Horwitz and Scott Higham followed by my most favorite Dean Flagel. He was wonderful. He kept our attention, gave us great information about college admissions, but definitely kept us entertained. Everyday I start to like this conference a little bit more.

Newseum- july 11, 2011

Today we went to the Newseum. It was an incredible collection of media coverage, photojournalism, and newspaper clippings. The amount of history that is covered in that one building is astonishing. It’s definately one of those places that you could easily get lost in and spend all day. My favorite part about the Newseum was the Pulitzer prize winning photograghs. They were some of the most eye-popping, mouth dropping pictures I have ever seen. The messages that were conveyed by simple pictures, I believe, is what made them so unique. It brings to life the real pain and suffering that other people are feeling; those raw emotions that normally can only be felt in the moment are conveyed clearly in each of these pictures. Another amazing part of the Newseum was the actual pieces of the Berlin Wall that were brought to the U.S. It makes that part of history so much more real to be able to touch a part of history. The 9/11 exhibit was also incredible and heart-wrenching. There was a video of some of the live coverage that the journalist were getting at the moment of the attacks. This experience has been wonderful and I hope to get to visit the Newseum again.

Today was a good day but I can’t wait to see what tomorrow will hold. I loved meeting new people and making new friends! Our speaker, Chris Cilliza, was really good. He was charismatic and made you want to listen to what he had to say. One thing that I took away the most was that when you write if you don’t care what you’re talking about no one else will either. In small groups we talked about networking and worked on our elevator speeches. This will be very helpful later on in the future to remember what we are being taught. Can’t wait for the rest of the week!!!
